Detagged Domains
By Paul Lee - CEO of Weycrest, a leading domain name and web hosting provider.
What is a Detagged Domain Name?
This is quite a popular question. However only UK domains, co.uk, ,me.uk and org.uk can be detagged. So its not possible for say a .com to be "detagged."
It basically means the domain is no longer hosted or tagged to valid nameservers.
Without valid nameservers, a detagged domain can no longer function as no one on the internet will be able to resolve it. Obviously web sites and email associated with the detagged domain will cease to work.
Who can detag a domain name?
Only a valid domain registration agent for Nominet such as Weycrest. This can often happen if there has been a breakdown between the registrant of the domain and the agent. For example if the domain naming fee's have not been paid.
Can a detagged domain be registered?
No, because a detagged domain is still registered to the original registrant, so it is in a kind of limbo. It can either be re-registered by the registrant or cancelled.
Only once a domain is cancelled can be available for registration again on a "first come, first served" basis.
How long does it take for a detagged domain to come back into circulation?
Nominet obviously have to check with the registrants in order to confirm if they wish to renew or allow to lapse.
If allowed to lapse the domain will be suspended after 21 days, then cancelled in 6 to 8 weeks.
How can I tell if a domain is detagged?
You can find the status of a domain by using a public WHOIS service
How is a detagged domain restored by the registrant?
The registrant has to go to Nominet and fill out the change agent form, as well as pay a £15 fee for each detagged domain.
