Introduction
Google has grown to be the dominant search engine. Link popularity as a key component of its ranking algorithm, using what is calls PageRank.
PageRank Explained
Go to www.weycrest.co.uk. If you have the Google toolbar installed it will show a PageRank (PR) of 5. Basically Google interprets a link from Site A to Site B as a "vote" in favour of Site B.
However some votes especially from what Google regards "authoritative" site are better than others as Google has examined the page casting the vote. The site with the higher PR "casting the vote" generally confers more benefit to site it is linking to.
More important "authoritative" sites generally receive a higher page rank. In determining the page rank and the importance site Google takes into account lots of other factors.
This can include sophisticated text matching (keywords and key phrases) and the content of the pages interlinked with it. Arguably Google also takes into account the amount of traffic arriving at the site, how long visitors stay, whether they bookmark the site on arriving and how loyal the visitors are, in determining the overall importance or significant the site it.
This makes human tampering by webmasters difficult. So "keyword stuffing" is unlikely to win you friends at Google (and might earn your site a search engine ban).
But generally a webite that has many contexually relevant and quality links is awarded a higher page rank than those with less relevant and lower quality links, and thus should, all things being equal rank better in the search engines for its given keywords.
It therefore follows that developing the Page Rank of your site and encouraging quality and relevant inbound links should be a cornerstone of your web promotion strategy.
Bad Neighbourhoods
Be very wary of "link farms" or link exchange programmes designed to inflate Page Rank. Especially avoid links from web spammers or "splogs" (blogs stuffed with links and keywords). These are more likely to damage your sites ranking.
Submission Software
I feel these are a waste of money and perhaps the worst way to submit your site to a search engine. Manually submitting your sites to every search engine is not only time consuming but it could take weeks for the search engine spider to visit your site and longer still to deep crawl it and enter all the pages into the database.
How Best to Link
Getting a quality inbound link to your is the best and fastest method of getting your site noticed and ranked by Google and the other search engines.
Directories
Get your site listed by DMOZ (Open Directory) but don't hold your breath as your site will be reviewed by human editors who are also volunteers so it can take months for your site to be considered. However Google places heavy emphasis on a DMOZ listing because your site has been reviewed by a human so it is worth the wait.
You might also wish to consider a listing with Yahoo but there is a fee with no guarantee of being successful.
Its very important before you submit that your site is complete with no dead links, and contains quality useful content rather than being stuffed with adsense advertising or affiliate links. See our other articles on Submit_Your_Website_to_Directories for details of other directories you can submit to.
Request Links
You can use Google to search on your sites keywords (for instance "cheap car loans" then analyze the backlinks for sites that rank high in the search engines for those terms.
To find the back links you can can enter linkdomain:www.popularsite.com into the Yahoo Search Engine to find who links to that site. You can then ask the sites back linking to this popular site if they will link to you as well.
You can automate this to a certain extent using specialist software. Study our articles on SEO_Elite_Review and Blog and Ping your Website into Yahoo
Trade association sites, charities and professional bodies are worth joining as well as often they have a members directory which contain a description of your organisation togethor with a link.
Another way to get quality backlinks is by what is known as "article marketing." Here you submit articles on your specialisation to article websites or "ezines." At the bottom of your article you include a short bio, describing yourself but also including a link back to your organisations website. A variation on this is to issue press releases on your organisation.

Conclusion
A good linking strategy will speed your sites entry into the search engines and increase its Page Rank. Be wary of text link networks, or even purchasing second hand sites which already possess age rank and inbound links as Google's algorithm becomes ever more sophisticated and alert to abuses of links.
